New York City's Finance Department is pulling property-tax exemptions worth $38 million from more than 900 nonprofits that couldn't prove they deserved the tax breaks. Through outreach efforts city officials were trying to determine which organizations were legitimate non-profits, and which ones were exploiting the system.
Notable "non-profits" that had tax exemptions revoked were the American Youth Hostel and the United Jewish Appeal. Officials say the American Youth Hostel was "not carrying out any mission" besides a cheap place to stay so their tax exemption was revoked, while the United Jewish Appeal had its tax break reduced from 100% to 9% because the majority of their headquarters is rented out for commercial purposes.
