We are delighted to announce the election of three new members to our Board of Directors.
Trish Coughlin is a philanthropist and community volunteer. She retired in 2012 from Goldman Sachs, where she was a Managing Director, most recently in the Salt Lake City office. She is a CPA and CMA , with a B.S. in Accounting and a B.A. in International Relations from Lehigh University. In addition to the Community Foundation of Utah, Trish serves on the boards of the YWCA of Salt Lake City and the McGillis School. She is also co-Chair of the Womens Giving Circle of Utah
Scott Huntsman is President and CEO of GlobalSim, a technology and simulation company. Prior to joining GlobalSim, he spent 11 years on Wall Street as an investment banker, most recently at Credit Suisse, where he focused on mergers, acquisitions, and corporate finance transactions. Mr. Huntsman earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Columbia College and an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He also studied at the London School of Economics as a Kohn Fellowship recipient. An avid backcountry skier, Scott serves on the Boards of ClearOne (NASDAQ: CLRO) and Ballet West.
Kym McClellland is a Realtor with Chapman Richards and Associates. Kym grew up in Colorado Springs, Colorado and moved to Utah in 1977 after obtaining a Bachelors and Masters degree from Colorado State University. She has been a full time REALTOR for the past 34 years: the last 20 years at Chapman Richards and Associates where she helped to establish Chapman Richards Cares, a Corporate Advised Fund through the Community Foundation of Utah. Kym has chaired numerous committees for the Salt Lake and Utah Board of REALTORS and was instrumental in establishing the Utah Association of REALTORS Housing Opportunity Fund which funds various housing projects throughout the state, including Habitat for Humanity, The Road Home and others. Kym is an active volunteer and has served on the Boards of The Fourth Street Clinic, Mark Eaton’s Standing Tall for Youth, The Rape Crisis Center and The Work Activity Center. She is currently on the Board of Directors of The Maliheh Free Clinic.
Eric Shaw is the Director of Community and Economic Development for Salt Lake City. He is a recent arrival to Utah from Louisiana, where he served as Vice President of Programs and Policy at Foundation for Louisiana, leading grantmaking, advocacy and policy work on issues of civic engagement, affordable housing, small minority business development and community wealth building. He served Director of Community Planning for the Louisiana Office of Community Development Disaster Recovery Unit and has held economic development and planning positions in Miami, Washington D.C., and at the Silicon Valley Foundation. He has an undergraduate degree from UCLA and a master’s degree in urban planning from Harvard University School of Design.
IRS to Speed Up Public Disclosure of Groups That Lost Charity Status
Utah was one of the leading states in the closure of defunct nonprofits during the IRS purge. We saw well meaning donors wanting to grant to organizations that were no longer tax exempt. The IRS used to take six months to post the names of nonprofits that had failed to file proper paperwork for three years and therefore lost their tax exempt status. Now the names will be released within 30 days. You can search the list here.

Athlete's foundations give little away
Nearly half of 50 sports stars’ nonprofit groups whose financial records were reviewed by The Boston Globe spent less than 65 percent of their revenues on charitable programs and contributions. As a Not Fan of the Yankees - here is one that really struck me: " A foundation started by New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez gave only 1 percent of proceeds to charity during its first year of operation in 2006, then stopped submitting mandatory financial reports to the IRS and was stripped of its tax-exempt status. Love UT Give UT? It's exploding!
With just 38 days to go, Love UT Give UT is really picking up momentum! I wanted to share a few updates with you.
- Over 250 schools and nonprofits have signed up to participate, and we anticipate hitting 300
- Every area of service to our community is represented - human services, animal care, education, arts, health care and education.
- Many organizations have set up their individual page at www.loveutgiveut.org. If you have a minute, browse through them. You’ll be amazed at the quality of nonprofits and schools working to improve our communities.
- While it’s still early, please explore the options in the tool kit to help formulate a roll out plan for your company. This can be found at http://loveutgiveut.razoo.com/giving_events/utah13/corptoolkit.
We continue to see synergy in the nonprofit sector as local groups spring up in St. George, Logan, Ogden, Moab, and Utah County to deepen their collaboration and leverage media and momentum. The Utah Non Profits Association (UNA) is providing training and encouragement to the registered organizations ensuring the event is both successful and professional.
The Community Foundation of Utah is grateful for the opportunity to serve the organizations that make Utah ‘the place’ to live.
Women's Giving Circle 2012 Grantees!
WOMEN’S GROUP’S SECOND YEAR OF OPERATION CULMINATES IN $15,000 IN GIFTS FOR UTAH WOMEN AND GIRLS
A second round of grants has been made by the Utah Women’s Giving Circle, a two-year old community group formed to fund programs which strengthen women in Utah, and grow possibilities for Utah girls. Inspired to establish the group when they learned that less than 2% of foundation dollars in Utah go to serve women and girls, members leverage small, individual donations into a significant fund and, in turn, invest in programs decided by member vote.
On Saturday, members of Utah Women’s Giving Circle voted to distribute $15,000 to the following groups:
- The American Association of University Women’s e-Smart STEM Camp for Girls, a camp for 7th grade girls in St. George to explore math, science and related technology;
- Early Head Start at the Horizonte School, a nationally recognized program to provide a comprehensive child and family services for low-income pregnant women and teen moms with infants and toddlers ages birth to three years old; and
- Girl Scouts of Utah’s Camp CEO, a weekend camp for girls which exposes them to powerful female role models and focuses on self-confidence and leadership.
“What we have done in two short years is a clear testament to the power of collective giving.” said Circle Co-chair Trish Coughlin.
The group has raised over $45,000 in membership and endowed funds since its inception in January 2011, distributing a similar amount last year to grantees Planned Parenthood Teen Success Program, the YWCA Choices for Women Program, and Global Artisans, a refugee self-sufficiency program.
Membership is designed to be inclusive for women of all ages and incomes: girls 18 and under join for $50; educators, students, seniors, artists, and women who work in the nonprofits can join for $100, and the rate is $250 for all others. In addition to the money raised through membership, an endowment has been established to ensure a strong future for the organization, to which public donations are welcome.

Scholarships for students who have been Home Schooled
This fund was established to support the college dreams of Utah students who have been home schooled. To qualify for this grant award, applicants must be a resident of the State of Utah, have been home schooled for at least five years of their primary and/or secondary education, be college bound (preference is given to students with a 3.25 or above), be admitted or attending a four-year college or university, and demonstrate financial need. Selection criteria will focus on college readiness as demonstrated by GPA / transcripts and/or Home School Portfolio.
The 2013 application deadline is February 28, 2013.
